The Public Interest Network is seeking a Grant Writer to join our central team responsible for fundraising from foundations, large donors and other institutions.

Grant Writer Representative Responsibilities

The Grant Writer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing and editing grant proposals, funder updates and grant reports, and other pitch materials that promote our organizations’ programs, campaigns and values;
  • Researching and identifying foundation and donor prospects, and helping to maintain the information in our central database;
  • Supporting grantseekers for our organizations around the country, including  training staff to be effective grantseekers, acting as a clearinghouse for advice and information on funding strategy and the funding community and working with The Public Interest Network’s management team to reach our overall grantseeking goals; and
  • Building the movement by recruiting staff for our organizations and supporting priority programs and projects, which could include a wide array of activities - from training entry-level staff to phone banking activists to helping with media events.

This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance.

Qualifications

We are looking for writers with talent and passion for their craft. Candidates should be inspired by our vision for a better world and approach to winning change that’s built to last, and embrace our network's core values. Additionally, top candidates will:

  • Have exceptional expository writing and verbal persuasion skills, with the ability to translate complex campaigns and programs into compelling stories. Note: all finalists also will be required to complete a writing and editing test;
  • Be flexible, able to embrace new challenges and have a strong work ethic;
  • Be detail-oriented, deadline-driven, highly organized and have excellent project management skills;
  • Like, and be excellent at, working with people but also thrive in a behind the scenes role;
  • Be able to work creatively and independently, as well as take direction and work as part of a team; and
  • Most importantly, be passionate about making a difference on the issues we work on. This is hard work with results that often don’t pay off until far into the future, but you’ll wake up every morning knowing you’re raising money to solve some of our biggest problems with a team of people just as motivated to make a difference as you are.

The Grant Writer position requires a two-year commitment.

About The Public Interest Network

The Public Interest Network operates and supports more than a dozen organizations – including PIRG, Environment America and their state affiliates – committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change.

Our work focuses on the problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.

And our approach is unique: We focus on the big picture, but are relentlessly pragmatic and prioritize making a difference in people’s lives over making a statement. We work with everybody to make change happen, political ideology aside, championing good ideas wherever they come from. And we are serious about the work -- we set clear goals, benchmarks and systems to measure our progress, and hold ourselves accountable to making change now and building for the future.

This unique approach gives our staff an opportunity to make a concrete difference for the environment and the public interest -- just as hundreds of dedicated staff have done over our 50 year history. If you want to add to this change-making legacy; if you have the passion and the drive that it takes; if you're looking for a mission, not just a job -- then let’s talk.
