Job Title: Principal Automation Engineer

Position Purpose:
This position will be responsible for overall system architecture, design, and engineering, specializing in controls engineering. This includes mechanical layout, product flow, electromechanical systems, control systems, programming. This position will collaborate and assist R&D, sales/marketing, and other departments throughout Harland.
The Engineer must have experience in PLC logic and programming with any of the following PLCs: Allen Bradley (preferred), Modicon, GE Fanuc, Siemens, etc.; and HMI configuration of any of the following software packages: Allen Bradley (preferred), Wonderware, GE Cimplicity, Siemens, etc. This position must apply principles of engineering and electrical theory to create designs, implement and debug prototypes, machinery, and associated systems.
This position requires average supervision and is generally able to make decisions and initiate actions. Peers and/or management will review work, and this position will interact with others, including customers, purchasing, manufacturing, sales, outside vendors, engineering, and management.
Principal Automation Engineer will be able to lead and assist Jr. Automation and Control Engineers designs.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures the workmanship meets or exceeds company and Customer expectations and is complete as defined by Customer and Harland Medical Systems specifications
- Designs contain knowledge of and compliance to applicable industrial and Customer standards
- Conducts a peer review for the final checking of all drawings and Bills of Materials before releasing designs
- Maintains low levels of rework
- Uses principles of electrical theory, sound engineering methods and specialized knowledge of Harland Medical Systems’ capabilities to produce effective designs
- Participates in project meeting and review meetings
- Breaks down information obtained from specifications, sketches, Customer provided drawings, and instructions furnished by others to generate design solutions
- Performs initial design, modifications and/or enhancements to existing designs of production machinery and associated systems as necessary
- Uses CAD software to document designs prior to production
- Uses CAD software to record changes to drawings as required or directed
- Obtains quotes from vendors on component elements of the design by providing fully defined component specifications
- Prepares complete bills of materials
- Generates software programs to control machinery and provide operator interfaces
- Organizes and maintains project filing systems per engineering standard
- Responsible for proper and timely project status reports to the Supervisor
- Responsible for ensuring that projects are manufactured, operational and tested to specifications prior to delivery
- Provides answers to technical and/or complex questions from Customers via telephone and on-site service calls as appropriate
- Aids management in resolving warranty, service, and technical issues
- Provide on-site support, possibly including travel, per direction of Management for installation and service
- Provides technical support to in-house production
- Responsible for interfacing with shop personnel during assembly and debug
- Responsible for interfacing with shop personnel during fabrication, assembly and testing of parts and machinery
- Responsible for interfacing with Customers and/or vendors at design reviews
- Responsible for interfacing with Customers and/or vendors on service calls if necessary
- Assists in meeting financial objectives using sound planning and judgment
- Ensures projects are designed in the most cost-efficient manner to meet corporate profit objectives and Customer requirements
- Ensures designs are complete on or before due date to ensure maximum schedule efficiency through the production and testing phases, allowing completion by the date due
- Identifies potential change orders and provides management with the appropriate information to obtain written approvals from Customers for all changes in scope of work and delivery dates
- Follows design specifications and management direction to ensure timely completion of change order approvals
Education, Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum 15 years Systems Controls Engineer experience.
- Requires a BS degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent education plus experience
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Proficient with Programmable Logic Controllers
- Familiar with remote input/output devices and industrial networks
- Familiar with operator interface terminals with SCADA systems
- Knowledge of networking and TCP/IP
- Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components, servo systems and electromechanical systems
- Knowledge of industrial sensors and measurement systems
- Proficient in AutoCAD for 2D design
- Proficient with Windows® operating systems
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel®, Word® and PowerPoint®
- Knowledge of Microsoft Project® desired
- Familiarity in C++, VB.net or C#.net programming

- Employee is required to use appropriate PPE including, but not limited to, nitrile or latex gloves, lab coat, hair bonnet, shoe covers, beard cover, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shield, or respiratory mask while working in a lab or manufacturing space.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on level surfaces for a prolonged period. Ascend or descend ladders and stare cases. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms above shoulder height and below the waist. This position may occasionally be exposed to areas that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.
