We partner with organizations working to advance health equity, economic opportunity, and wellbeing in communities around the world–co-creating products, services, campaigns, and programs that improve people’s lives.
From campaigns that helped millions access public health information, to services that catalyzed deep change in communities, these interventions have reached over 69 million people. From our studios in New York, San Francisco, and Nairobi, we’ve worked with organizations in 45 countries.
The Role
We’re currently looking for a Sr. Communications Specialist who is equal parts storyteller and digital strategist. A member of a 4-person Global Brand & Communications team, in this role, you will help shape IDEO.org’s voice and presence in the world by writing stories about IDEO.org’s work and impact for various audiences and mediums, manage our social media platforms, and support creative marketing and brand initiatives.
In this role, you will:
- Manage and co-author storytelling on our website - from case studies to perspectives, helping people across our organization turn their ideas and projects into clear and compelling stories that communicate the power of design in tangible ways
- Write and distribute our monthly newsletter
- Manage Google Analytics dashboard and compile monthly analytics reports
- Develop and manage content for social media platforms and measure engagement
- Write marketing copy for fundraising campaigns, digital campaigns, and event collateral
- Support knowledge management - ensuring consistency in how we capture, track, and archive stories about our work
- Help ensure brand compliance on external-facing communications and deliverables
- Manage and write award submissions
- Provide proofreading and editing support to design and program teams - helping polish presentations, publications, and other external-facing assets
- Assist with the Design Kit platform (IDEO.org’s suite of publications, tools, and courses for practicing human-centered design) - managing inventory and tracking sales and revenue
- Support developers on updates and troubleshooting for the IDEO.org and Design Kit websites
- Support the planning and coordination of events and other brand-related projects and initiatives
The ideal candidate:
- You have at least 3-5 years of professional work experience in communications, marketing, and/or digital media (experience with mission-driven or creative brands a plus)
- You're a great writer and storyteller, comfortable working across a range of mediums (from long-form blog posts to punchy campaign copy to storyboarding)
- You’re a creative and critical thinker with an ability to craft narratives for multiple audiences
- You have an eye for details and a keen proofreading ability - you nerd out on grammar and catch typos before they go out the door
- You’re mindful of cultural nuances and open to feedback from people with different points of view
- You’re passionate about creating communications that center equity and representation
- You’re excited about the role design can play in solving some of the world’s most complex social challenges - like reproductive health access, refugee rights, and criminal justice reform
- You’re proactive and organized, able to prioritize well and manage multiple projects at once
- You have experience working with MailChimp, Google Analytics, SEO, and Adwords
- You’re familiar with Google Suites and CMS systems like Craft and WordPress

The salary range associated with a Sr. Communications Specialist is $75,000 - $78,000, with participation in our benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 4% 401k match, technology stipend, caregiver stipend, professional development stipend 6 weeks a year of paid vacation, 15 paid holidays a year, and a 5-week paid Sabbatical after 5 years of service.
Wondering where you might land within this range? The exact salary for a role will ultimately depend on many factors, including; peer data within our organization, level of specialization required in the role, a candidate’s level of direct and relevant experience, among others. During your interview process, your Recruiter will discuss level and salary with you, to help you better understand how we make equitable pay and level decisions at IDEO.org.
The When & Where
The Global Brand & Communications team works with colleagues across the US and Nairobi, Kenya. To accommodate collaboration across time zones, we’re looking for someone who can be based in the US, working from our New York City studio ~2 days/week, generally holding EST working hours, with some flexibility for early mornings to enable collaboration with Nairobi teammates. IDEO.org will provide a relocation stipend to relocate to NYC for the role.
The Application Requirements
If you see yourself and your skillset in any of the above, please apply. Studies tell us that the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can prevent women and people of color from applying unless they meet every single qualification. Your experience doesn’t perfectly match the job description? Apply anyway. You just might be a great candidate for this role or others.
Curious about sponsorship for US roles? IDEO.org is generally able to sponsor non-immigrant Visa types, including new Visa petitions, Visa extensions, and Visa transfers. However, IDEO.org does not financially sponsor PERM-based Green Cards for those seeking US permanent residence.
In order to be considered for the role, please submit a resume, a cover letter sharing more about your interest in IDEO.org and in the role, and 2-3 writing samples that showcase your work and tone of voice. We'll be reviewing applications on a rolling basis in May. Please submit an application by Wednesday, May 31, 2023. We look forward to learning more about you!
